Increased Visits to the Emergency Room for Dental Pain

According to the American Dental Association, the Emergency Room admits more than 2 million people every year for dental pain. Since 2000, there has been an increase of about 1 million dental patients. Many dental schools, such as the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, have their fourth year dental school students see patients in community clinics to provide care to the underserved populations. Communities are trying to decrease ER admissions for dental pain by providing low-income clinics for those who cannot afford dental care coverage. Dr. Charles H. Norman, president of the American Dental Association, says ER visits have gone up due partially due to Medicaid.  In some states, Medicaid does not offer adults dental treatment. Dr. Matt Roberts, an attending dentist at the University of Illinois at Chicago, tells his students, “they have the time and ability to provide service for people who might wind up in an emergency room and fall into a cycle of deteriorating oral health and severe pain.”  Being admitted to the ER for dental pain can range from $400 to $1,500 and the patient will most likely have to do dental visits anyways. According to the ADA, general dental visits can cost around $90-200. Several dentists stress the importance of serving underserved communities to help those who have trouble affording dental care.

  2. Your blog post begins to touch on the ethical issues of health care.

From my observations, medicaid can be considered a double-edged sword. On one side, it helps those that are struggling to get help, but on the other side, it's hard not to look at certain patients that have QUEST (Hawai'i's version of medicaid) wearing tons of gold jewelry and wonder if they aren't cheating the system.

I wonder how many patients that go to an ER complaining of dental pain: 1. actually have pain, 2. actually check back with their dentist?
